Dear all international students,
We are going to have an extra day off on Monday, April 6, to celebrate one of the Chinese traditional holidays, Ching Ming Festival. That is to say, we will have a 3-day-straight off on Saturday,Sunday and Monday. Please be aware of personal and property safety. Those who are planning a trip out are required to fully inform our office staff about the detailed travel information and remember to be back and ready for Tuesday's classes.
Ching Ming Festival (qīng míng jié), also called Tomb-Sweeping Day, falls on the 5th of April according to the Gregorian Calendar. It has been kept as a public holiday for honoring our ancestors at their graves in China. On that day, members of the family go tidy up the tombs and graves of the deceased, wash and clean the tombstones, and, if necessary, they repaint the characters on the tombstones. In some villages, people put willow branches on the gates leading to their homes, which are supposed to keep away from evil spirits. Lighting candles, burning incense, joss sticks, and bowing ritual are also part of the solemn celebrations. This old tradition of honoring the dead reminds us that not even death can separate families, relatives and friends.
